Butchering day is here!
When we received our meat birds I knew that we weren’t set up for butchering them. I figured we had about eight weeks to figure it out, no biggie. I knew it would all work out in the end. We were very happy when my farmer friend, Tonya, at Clover Hill Farm offered to let us butcher with them. They had just built a chicken plucker so this would be great! It was a win-win situation, we had a place to butcher our birds and they acquired (a lot of) extra help. We were getting super excited as the big day approached.
We planned to let the kids be involved in helping with the whole process. We want them to have a thorough understanding of where their food comes from. They know what their food eats, they know how and where their food is raised, and they understand the process of how it gets to the table. To help them prepare for the big event we had a family movie night of watching chicken butchering videos on youtube. I have to say we all enjoyed it and felt ready for butcher day.
