When I was in the 2nd or 3rd grade, we had a butter-making session in school where the teacher passed around a Mason jar about half full of what I thought was milk, and we each took turns shaking it until it turned into butter and buttermilk. I was so excited about being able to make butter that I couldn’t wait to do that at home. I tried it that night and was so disappointed it didn’t work. No matter how much I shook that jar of milk, it just wouldn’t turn into butter. My mom tried explaining the difference between cream and milk but I didn’t understand it at the time – all I knew was that liquid in the jar looked like milk, and the teacher didn’t say it wasn’t milk, so why wouldn’t it work?
