They said I couldn't do it. My property is too small. There are too many land restrictions living in town. I have trouble sewing in a straight line and I set off the smoke detector when I boil water. Well you know what? I'm figuring it out. I currently have a flock of ducks, quail, and chickens, as well as four Nigerian Dwarf goats. Between our livestock and our gardens (over half our 1/4 acre is edibles), we produce most of our food. I may not be the poster child of a domestic goddess, but I am definitely a homesteader. Find out how I overcome challenges. I believe that everyone can be a homesteader, no matter where they live. Visit me at The 104 Homestead

It's been my dream to have a homestead for a LONG time. Finally, we bought a property about an hour out of Las Vegas, NV in the high mountain desert. It's small...but it's working. What I have realized is that you can homestead anywhere....even in an urban environment. When I look back now on my life in Las Vegas, I recognize I've been homesteading in various ways for years! We've just expanded, that's all! Our property is 3/4 acre of desert land, and we are making this work! It's so exciting! I'm dedicated to learning with and sharing with other like-minded people...all about being self-sufficient!

I may not be your typical homesteader. My husband is active duty USMC, so we pull up roots (pun intended) every couple of years and tend to live in rented housing. However homesteading is a mindset, not a number of acres. My husband and I do everything we can to live simply, self-sufficiently, and as naturally as possible on 1/3 of an acre in the suburbs. We challenge each other to find new uses for things, to make do or do without, to invent new ways to be self-sufficient. I hope you'll join me on this journey, learn from my experiences and share your own! I'm unleashing my inner farmer in suburbia, and you can, too! I'm a recovering attorney and freelance writer who lives in a fancy suburban subdivision in Iowa. It's the kind of place where everyone has lawn services and cleaning ladies. But not me! I'm steadfastly replacing my manicured lawn with raised beds and compost piles. In that great sheltered spot under the back deck (where most of my neighbors have their hot tubs), I have a chicken pen. My kitchen is always a mess because I'm constantly cooking up new ways to use my fresh produce. My neighbors think I'm crazy. But they never turn down a home-cooked meal, a bag of fresh garden veggies, or a carton of eggs.

Natural Beauty and Homemade Everything It’s that simple. I am simplifying the ingredients in my family’s food and looking at natural ways to stay healthy (and therefore beautiful in a godly outlook of the term). I also want to get back some of the knowledge of what is considered a simpler time. Anyone who looks into times gone by will see that life was simple in a lot of ways, but it was not easy. Simplicity should not be confused with ease and comfort. I want to continue to learn better how to grow my own food, make the things I use often – from lotions, perfumes, household cleaners, and soaps, to cheese.

Hi, I'm Dianne. I live with my husband on 1.5 acres in Charleston, TN. The name of my blog is Hidden Springs Homestead. I grew up on a small homestead of 5 acres, married a city guy and couldn't get away from the farm quick enough! Only to have, after a few years, a deep inside desire to go back to the farm. As I have gotten older and wiser I have realized that homesteading was the best thing ever. My parents and grandparents did know best! We've been married for 25 years and gone through some really hard times. Job losses, health issues and the such. October 2015, we made the decision to get away from being so dependent on the "social norm" and began growing our own food, canning and preserving, and working on becoming more self-sufficient. We have a plan in place to raise goats for milk, chickens for meat and eggs and the such, but other things have to take place first. That's how Hidden Springs Homestead came about was the "other stuff". I realized through my horrible failures and not having deep pockets this was going to be slow journey, but well worth the wait. If I can share my failures or some small tip that will help others to achieve their dream, then we both win and that makes me happy.

I'm Jen. We live on 45 acres in the beautiful state of Virginia on an old Pre-Civil War era tobacco plantation farm. We were homesteaders before we moved, but we are becoming avid homesteaders since the move. Homesteading for us came after my momma died in 2012. We currently raise chickens (for eggs & meat), ducks, goats, and pigs. In the near future we hope to add cattle (for milk and beef) and a billion other things! Once you start- you just can’t stop. And it really does all begin with chickens. We love doing everything DIY and try to build/cook/make most everything from scratch. We’ve been homesteading for two years now, but with our new home(stead) things are about to get c-r-a-z-y (in a good way!) and we hope you stop by because we have some great homesteading stuff to share with you!

When we found this piece of paradise in Northeast Texas we knew this would be where our future was to be found. As we stood next to the cobbled-together gate and viewed the overgrown and cluttered property, the old and broken fences and the tattered 1880’s barn, it was apparent that we had LOTS of work ahead of us! One step at a time we drew closer and closer to the life we dreamed we could live. Living where we do has taught me a new appreciation for the beauty God has blessed us with each and every day. I notice the small things more – the beauty of the first tiny spring flowers to peek out from the sleeping grass, the graceful hawk that calls to her young as she teaches them to fly, and the amazing array of colors present on a butterfly’s wings. I try to be as gentle as I can as I tread on this land and in this life. I’ve learned to improve our garden soil so that I can produce more of what we eat & to preserve the rainfall for garden irrigation. I’ve learned about the price paid for convenience foods in currency, health and environmental terms and I’ve begun to make many of those things myself in a healthier & less expansive manner. I’ve become so much more aware of my environmental self, and I’m pleasantly surprised at how easy it is to make small changes that have a real effect. One step at a time I find that I’m rediscovering myself. I’ve heard the phrase “Bloom where you’re planted” and I’m so blessed to have been planted here!

24 ArticlesRon Melchiore
Ron is an Outdoorsman/Pioneer, Homesteader, Remote Exploration Camp Manager and Author. Living off grid since 1980, Ron and his wife Johanna have spent the better part of their lives "unplugged." As part of the back to the land movement that originated in the 70's, they have spent their adult years living the homestead dream. Ron spent 20 years in Maine mastering the many facets of homesteading: gardening, food preservation, animal husbandry, and construction, to name a few. The need for money became obvious in those early years, so as a small-business endeavor, he added logging, tree farming and milling lumber to his repertoire, which ultimately earned him and his wife awards as Outstanding Tree Farmers. Because Ron possesses an adventurous spirit, he decided to pursue a long-time dream of his, to thru hike all 2,100+ miles of the Appalachian Trail — so, he spent 5 1/2 months walking. A cross-country bicycle trip years later satisfied his need for mobile adventure. He has survived forest fires and bear encounters. Ron and his wife lived for 17 wonderful years 100 miles in the Canadian wilderness on a remote lake. Access was by float plane and they generally only saw other humans twice a year when they came out for resupply. A computer/satellite link serves was their connection to the outside world. The couple now are building their third and final homestead on the coast of Nova Scotia. They recently co-wrote a new homesteading book titled The Self-Sufficient Backyard: For the Independent Homesteader. Over 40 years of homesteading experience happily shared with our dear readers.

20 ArticlesMonique Volkers
For a long time I had a passion for Portugal and for living in the countryside. But I was manager at the Dutch Refugee Council in Holland, which I also did with commitment and involvement. However, in 2010 I moved from Wageningen in the Netherlands to our farm Terra do milho in the Algarve. My desire was, and is, to build up a sustainable life, whilst my partner Tom still stayed part-time in Holland running his comedy-business. Lots of things were developed since then and many of those things I had to learn from scratch. Changing 4 ha overgrown wild land into a fruit orchard and vegetable garden was a challenge. After the land was accessabel we bought our first goats Bianca and Kimberly. Soon after that chickens were added. Meanwhile we were building our own house and all the utilities needed, like fresh drinking water. Now we are coming into a new phase: sharing our experience and knowledge, and selling our products and skills. On our website and our social media you can read and see a lot of us. Hopefully we will meet you there.

Now, using what we've learned, we're moving with the four children to a house in a tiny village where we will continue to pursue sustainable and self-reliant living.

We are a husband and wife duo with 5 kids, 4 boys and 1 girl. Our kids are growing up fast and only the 2 youngest are still in high school. Our journey began at our 1700 square feet home with just over 1 acre of land. God has blessed us greatly and we recently purchased and moved into our farmhouse and 14 acres of beautiful farm land in Ann’s hometown. Over the years God has compelled us to cultivate a simpler, less busy, and more joyful life. That is a process that takes time with one new learned skill or one simplification or change at a time. We love our chickens and goats and the benefits they provide us for a healthier more natural diet. We enjoy gardening to raise our own food, but also appreciate the therapeutic qualities of getting our hands in the dirt. We are not masters at any of this, but have learned a lot in our journey.
13 ArticlesStacey Upchurch
My name is Stacey Upchurch and I am a wife and mother of four, beautiful girls. Our life is full of home-school shenanigans, raising organic plants and animals, health and fitness coaching, and sharing the love of Christ. I am currently enrolled in Trinity School of Natural Health and will be receiving my (ND) Doctor of Naturopathy Degree. Upon completion, I will pursue certification with the American Naturopathy Medical Accreditation Board (ANMCB). The good ol’ saying of…. you can take the girl out of the farm but you can’t take the farm out of the girl…is very accurate. I love the benefits my family receives from raising organic plants and animals. The circle of life on a farm is extremely rewarding. While living as chemically free as possible is our family’s goal, we do splurge every now and then. An important factor to a balanced life is reducing stress. As a result, we have found harmony in the structure we have set for ourselves. I am not a medical doctor or a veterinarian. Furthermore, I post only the lessons I have learned personally to help better someone else’s experience. Everyone needs to find a balance that works for them. In conclusion, I pray that I may inspire you to gain more control of your life and over-all health.

Hello! My name is Kamay Flemens. I homeschool both of my children, Alex 18 and Zoey 10. I teach homesteading, survivalist and life skills right along with their regular core curriculum. I believe it is a lost art and necessary in these times. My husband and I are amateur preppers that believe prepping should begin with a debt free, frugal, live within your means lifestyle. Also, I believe if you are going to 'talk the talk, you need to walk the walk.' Instead of just learning, this year we have begun our homesteading adventures by adding chickens, rabbits and a feeder pig to our small property. My daughter and I have also learned food preservation through water bath canning and oven dehydration. We expanded our yearly garden, and have started learning about foraging and herbal medicines as well. I am also an admin, or member of several groups on Facebook dedicated to homesteading, being self sufficient, and improving your DIY skills. I SHARE A LOT of information I find from other bloggers in all of these groups. Learn, teach, 'Do the stuff.'

I am a homesteader on 2 1/2 acres in the Pacific NW. It all started when I read Animal Vegetable Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver almost 10 yrs ago. We already had a few chickens, but then we got more. Then my girls joined 4-H and we got more chickens. Than we substantially enlarged our vegetable garden and planted more fruit bearing plants. Then we got goats. And more chickens. And ducks. All with the goal to live a more self sustaining lifestyle. Wanting to know where our food came from, what was in it, and how little it traveled from our homestead to our belly's. And all from the efforts of our own hands. It is such a satisfying, fulfilling lifestyle and I am so grateful to be able to live this way. Come learn how to Grow, Harvest and Preserve with me on the homestead!

This blog is dedicated to documenting the trials and tribulations of having a completely indoor garden in a loft in the city. There are many articles, videos, and sites with ideas for cute little indoor gardens or ways for apartment dwellers to participate in the urban farming movement, but many of these ideas are not actually practical or sustainable over any period of time. This blog seeks to cut through the clutter of information, ideas, and products and figure out what is practical, what actually produces food, and other ways that an apartment dweller can participate in gardening and farming without any land at all. (Seriously we don’t even have a balcony) I hope you will join me on this journey and become an active participant in finding new ways that will allow us all to become just a little more sustainable.

A little bit about me: When I was a child there were two things I wanted to be when I grew up, a farmer and a veterinarian. As far back as I can remember I had always wanted to live in the country with a small farm with lots of animals, a large garden, herbs hanging to dry in the kitchen, and above all, to live in communion with nature. After working as a self-employed medical transcriptionist for nearly a decade, I chose to go back to school to become a registered veterinary technician. This is something I’ve wanted to do for quite some time. I have always had an affinity for animals, Mother Nature, plants, and learning about the “old ways” to do things. I enjoy the outdoors, reading, organizing, camping, hiking, and learning about new things. I am married and have three grown children, a son and two daughters. I also have four grandchildren, two boys and two girls. I have two cats and my husband and I live in a subdivision in an urban area – a far cry from the farm out in the country I dream of. I sometimes felt I grew up in the wrong area and era. I grew up wishing I was living in Appalachia and had a lifestyle akin to “The Waltons” or “Little House on the Prairie,” or even “The Foxfire” series, although now that I think about it, I certainly wouldn’t want ALL of that lifestyle.

9 ArticlesAnn @ Live The Old Way
We are a small family living on 85 acres in an underground, passive solar house in central North Carolina. We focus on ways to be self-sufficient and live off the land, with a big emphasis on “lost skills” that were used by previous generations. We keep chickens for eggs & meat; goats for milk, soft cheese and soap; ducks, turkeys and rabbits for meat and peacocks just for fun. We also hunt deer on our land for additional meat as needed and burn our own wood in our woodstove as the only wintertime heat source in our underground home. Thanks to the cool earth behind our walls in the summer, we can get away with open doors and air circulation even in the hottest months. We enjoy growing and raising our own food, practice spring, summer and fall planting rotations and are continuously adding to our own seed saving bank so that we aren’t dependent on anyone else for what we need to grow from year to year. While we do still use and enjoy some modern conveniences, we constantly work to establish self-sustainable substitutions and implement them one by one. Another big focus of ours is the use of herbal medicine, specifically using only plants and herbs that are native to our area. We like being able to substitute nature’s remedies in place of store-bought whenever we can. I’ve been extremely lucky to be able to study with some of the smartest herbalists and “wise women” in our neighboring Appalachian mountains over the past 11 years and I’m still learning. Please join us and take a step back in time!

I always smile when I hear someone talk about the “new” Urban Farming Movement. The truth is…there has been urban farming as long as there have been cities. For most of human history, food had to be produced close to home. We are realizing that “Factory Food” isn’t good for us or our fragile world. Many want to revive the ancient practice of raising their own food, but the skills to do this have been lost. It is our mission to help those who want to regain this knowledge. Let us help you combine the old with the new and build something better than both! We believe it is not grand gestures, but the small things, that will save our world.

Due to the presence of a day job, I (tongue-in-cheek) consider myself a Gentleman Homesteader. My wife usually considers me half that. Through Permaculture implementation, we strive to build resilient, sustainable food production systems that increase our family’s food security, and then that of our community. How is this possible when Husband slaves at least 50 hours a week behind a keyboard in a cubicle farm and Wife runs around after a mischievous toddler and soon-to-be-ornery infant? It’s possible because we continually design systems that work harder than we do.

At college, I met my future husband and together we have learned self-sufficiency skills and now have a country home, barn, and 17 acres where we can expand what we know and live more independently. Together we are passing down our knowledge to our 5 year old son who tags along with us in all of our adventures. Chickens, honeybees, a large organic garden (50 x 100 ft.), 41 fruit trees, and 53 fruit bushes complete our homestead and keep us busy. We are constantly adding on to our homestead and learning more ways to live self sufficiently.

My family lives on a small acreage homestead in Western Montana, where we grow fruits and veggies, milk cows and goats, raise a whole variety of free range poultry, and compost our little hearts out. We live naturally with nourishing ancient foods, herbs and traditional medicines. I reflect often on things like beauty, peace, relationships, parenting, and nature. Our homestead is a work in progress. We observe the natural forces that shape the land, and try our best to work within that framework as we plant orchards, cultivate gardens, and plan out fencing and grazing. There is always a project in the pipeline, a recipe being experimented with, or homestead home school breakthroughs to share!

My name is Samantha and I love to plant things! Trees, vegetables, flowers, and quite possibly my most loved…herbs. I am a former social worker in pursuit of off-grid homesteading—full-time! Since entering college I’ve found my heart being pulled toward environmental issues. For that, my favorite holiday (and half birthday) is Earth Day! My goal is to live making minimal negative impact on Mother Earth. And there are always more ways to do that, better and better! I started gardening five years ago, and my favorite place to be on Saturday mornings is the Farmer’s Market. Whenever I can be, I am outside. Mornings on the porch with some coffee or herbal tea are the best ways to start the day. Yet, I love to spend my “indoor” time on crafts, yoga, cooking, reading about and studying herbs, and spending time with my family. Everything here is definitely a work in progress, but I’m enjoying every step! I enjoy connecting with people—especially those seeking out the same type of livelihood. If there is anything I’ve left out, don’t hesitate to ask. I hope to hear from you soon!

I am a single mom of two great kids and daughter to one amazing man. This makes up my family that I am dragging along on a journey to a more sustainable life. We have attempted this many times but ever since I became widowed in 2012 I have had to work harder and find more ways to save, become more self sufficient and more sustainable. Currently we are living in an apartment and using two small plots at a community garden to grow our own food. We take advantage of local Farmer's Markets and farms for things we cannot raise or grow ourselves. One of our biggest changes was downsizing to squeeze four people into a two bedroom apartment while I returned to school to become a nurse. My father joined the mix and has become my staunchest supporter and biggest cheer leader. This new life has brought many changes and a whole new outlook on life. He is particularly interested in the value of food forests, perennial food production, and medicinal plants and herbs. Michael's experience as a licensed Financial Advisor and prior career in hospital administration and Human Resources have given him unique perspectives on the economics of Permaculture Design and the management of inputs. Michael is presently creating a demonstration site on acreage in the northern Shenandoah Valley of Virginia (temperate climate). He is also looking to work in Aid work situations worldwide to further his experience in varied climates. His ultimate goal is to teach the PDC at the collegiate level and in developing countries where adequate nutrition is not readily available. For as long as I can think I have been a plant enthusiast and I have been growing plants since I was a teenager. After finishing school I began a two-year apprenticeship as a landscape gardener in Germany. I was working for a large landscaping company for two years learning the trade as well as going to a school. During this time we were laying out and planting gardens for people. This taught me the fundamental basics of garden design, landscaping and gave me a practical and broad knowledge base of garden plants. My apprenticeship was followed by a professional program in Landscape Design in Germany and involved a thesis on Robinsonian Gardens in Ireland. For this I had to travel to Ireland to study the historical 'Wild Robinsonian Gardens'...and of course, we decided to move to Ireland after I finished with my professional program. In 1998 we moved to the South-West of Ireland and started a garden center. Running a garden center for over 19 years and dealing with amateur gardeners on a daily basis has taught me a lot about the problems that people have with growing plants and gardening. In 2013, I did a Permaculture design course and certificate with Geoff Lawton, one of the best and most impressive permaculture teachers around. This was truly an eye-opening experience that I can only recommend for anybody. Do it and it will change your life! We are since redesigning and integrating permaculture design principles into the garden. We also started to develop a small market garden operation as a sideline to our garden center. Producing healthy and tasty vegetables is our new focus.

My husband and I are the proud owners of 40 beautiful acres on the north coast of Oregon. We are working hard to reestablish it as a living, breathing farm; complete with a healthy and bio-diverse woodland, large organic gardens and a root cellar full of our own preserved foods – fruits, vegetables and meat – and to teach our daughters how to grow, harvest and preserve those things as well. We're building a new house and look forward to spending the rest of our lives there. We want to bring new life to the fields, to the orchard, to the outbuildings, and to our own selves. A life with mud on our boots, dirt under our fingernails, meat chickens, ducks, goats, pigs and cows roaming fertile fields and good food in our bellies. A life spent together, doing things that really matter, on forty acres of pure beautiful.
