Nipple waterers utilize a small nipple that works in a similar way to the types of waterers used for small rodents and rabbits. The nipple uses a small internal stopper to keep water from running out. When the chicken pecks at it, it pushes a small metal rod upward, removing the stopper, and allowing water to drip out. As soon as the pressure against the rod is removed, it drops back into place, stopping the flow of water. This has greatly reduced our water waste and keeps a fresh, clean water source available to the chickens at all times. Even our goats have started drinking out of the second waterer we added that is partially outside the coop despite having other fresh water available to them. They think it’s a game. If you aren’t already using a nipple style waterer then I highly recommend our two part series on building one. I’m confident you will love it.
