What is it about that first red tomato?
We set out a few plants early, before the last frost date, diligently covering them with a bucket so they won’t freeze overnight, just IMG_0606so that there is a chance one of the fruits will turn red before it is supposed to. We get so excited, seeing the first tinge of yellow and orange shining like the sunrise from the plant as soon as we get to the garden. We examine it, day after day, impatiently waiting for that orange to turn red. We finally pluck it from the vine and bite into it, right there in the garden, our prize still warm from the sun, bursting with juiciness – there is no other tomato like that first ripe one of the season from your own garden.
