Keeping chickens during the winter time can be tricky business. Do they need lights and extra heat? Some people do supplement their chickens with these things. We choose not to because we like to keep things as natural around our homestead as possible. I just like to look at it like this, if the pioneers kept chickens without supplemental lights and they survived just fine, we can do the same. With a few added precautions, we can keep our chickens healthy, happy and laying through the winter.

Hello... I'm Mary. A loving wife to a rancher, stay at home mama to three children, 3 and under. Originally from So Cal, I did not imagine I'd live the rural life, but here I am. God sure works in mysterious ways. Ha. Our homestead journey started with a few baby chicks. We have grown our flock to include, guineas and ducks. As I've mentioned, my husband ranches, so we have cattle too. We raise, breed and graze a variety of goats. We are a traditional catholic family trying to live a simple life.
